Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)?
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are relationship specialists who treat persons involved in interpersonal relationships. They are trained to assess, diagnose and treat individuals, couples, families, and groups to achieve more adequate, satisfying, and productive relationships. The practice also includes premarital counseling, child counseling, divorce, or separation counseling, and other relationship counseling. Requirements for licensure include a two-year master’s degree, passage of two comprehensive written examinations, 200 hours of clinical supervision, and at least 3,000 hours of supervised experience.
How long does therapy take?
The national average for sessions of psychotherapy is around 7-10 sessions. I work from a client centered approach; therefore, we will work together to determine the duration of therapy based upon individual needs, progress, and goals. My goal is keep treatment short term to save you money and to help your current circumstances improve as soon as possible. I am committed to building a collaborative, objective, non judgmental relationship and giving you the tools, support, education, skills needed to heal and reach your goals. In order for us to effectively work together, a commitment is needed on your end to do your part in the process (be open, willing, ready, honest, and dedicated).
My partner doesn't want to come in yet. Should I get started anyway?
Yes. In order for couples therapy or any therapy to be effective, each person has to be willing to work on him or herself. If your partner is not yet ready or open to therapy, please do not postpone your desire or need for support and help. Therapy is always an opportunity for self growth and personal transformation. Give yourself that gift. If your primary focus is the relationship, we can work together to uncover and understand your part in the pattern and what you can do create more happiness in your life.
What is Holistic Therapy?
Holistic medicine is a form of healing that considers the whole person — body, mind, spirit, and emotions — in the quest for optimal health and wellness. Holistic healing is not intended to serve as a band-aid or a onetime fix. It is an ongoing journey of discovery in search of more answers and ultimately; living better, being healthier, and striving for wholeness. A holistic healer recognizes that our discomforts and pain are a result of imbalances. All aspects of a person (mind, body, spirit, or emotions) are considered in evaluation and treatment.
What is a typical session like?
Individual Counseling sessions are 50-minutes in length. Yoga Therapy sessions and Reiki sessions are either 50 or 75-minutes in length. Couples therapy sessions are either 75-minutes or 90-minute sessions in length. My counseling office is located in Lakeview. I offer Reiki healing treatments in Lakeview, Bucktown, and Ravenswood. For your ease and convenience, sessions can also be offered in home or outdoors in nature.
Do you take Insurance?
I do not take insurance for the following reasons:
- Patient privacy cannot be guaranteed
- Insurance requires that a mental health diagnosis must be rendered on a patient’s permanent health record
- Insurance companies limit flexibility in that they will only cover a 50-60 minute session. In my experience, couples benefit from longer, more intensive sessions then the standard 50-60 minute session
Out of pocket, expert couples counseling may cost more, but it ensures privacy, provides you and your partner with freedom from medical diagnosis, and allows therapy to be flexible. It is an investment in both you and your partner’s short term and longer term health and happiness.
I can provide you with a receipt to send to your insurance company for reimbursement if your policy accepts out-of-network providers.
I accept cash, check, and credit card. I believe that therapy should be a right not a privilege and should be accessible to all interested individuals and couples. To eliminate finances as a barrier and make therapy accessible for everyone, I work on a sliding scale. If you are in financial hardship, please contact me directly to discuss payment options.
